Dutch Public Broascast NPO has changed its site. Downloading is now problematic.

This week the site has been changed completely. My VPN provider repaired the VPN DNS, so I can watch actually all the shows on line now, but Jaksta doesn't succeed in downloading the video. Actually it downloads 6 streams at once. Only one has the right size, but it is totally scrambled. VLC doesn't recognize it. Downloading with conversion on is not solving the problem.

This is the example: > https://www.npo.nl/de-nieuwe-stradivarius/07-07-2017/AT_2079962 <

It results in .m2ts - files instead of the .m4v or mp4 files I got before.

Some older shows are downloadable as before, but most of them not.

As this site is actually almost the only site I'm downloading from, it hits me quite hard.

Hi Gert,

Are you still having this problem or have you resolved it?

I am unsure, as you have another forum post that you made at almost the exact same time as this one stating that you sorted it.

Well Liam, I succeeded partly. It's a strange problem. Some files load well, although Jaksta shows that it has downloaded it but is still downloading. In that case the file is playable. On other moments. Files that seem more or less the same but an other show of the same series, start multiple downloads in .m2ts but does not result in any playable file. So, the problem is not solved but partly I succeed to work around it, although I have no idea why and how. It would be great if Jaksta would find a solution that really works predictably.

Hi Gert,

My suggestion would be to do a full reinstall. Sometimes just reinstalling over the existing version of Jaksta reuses some preference files, and if they are corrupted in any way then that can carry the problem over.

What you will need to do is delete the app (uninstall) from Applications instead of just reinstalling over it. Then in Finder go to the top menu and then access Go > (holding one of shift/alt/control/command) Library > Application Support > Jaksta Media Recorder and delete that folder (NOTE: doing this will erase your library file list in Jaksta, but your downloaded/converted files will remain intact). This folder and its files may already be deleted when the app is removed, but it's a good idea to double check and be thorough in case it remains and is reused when the app is reinstalled. Reboot the Mac and then do a reinstall of the latest version (https://www.jaksta.com/download/mac/jaksta-media-recorder) and it will regenerate a new copy of the deleted folder and the application files.

Start with that and let me know how you go.

 Hi Liam,

I did what you asked and zapped all the Jaksta De Luxe apps with all the related files, but it did not help. See added screenshots. The error showed on top of the list of the Jaksta window is the result of the attempt to download from the url that I copied in again after the error message so you can see the url also.

The strange thing is that most likely all the information is downloaded but not put together in the right way, giving file parts that make no sense (see the downloaded files in the other attachment.

Gert

Hi Gert,

You mentioned before that you are running a VPN whilst doing these downloads. Have you attempted to capture a video that consistently fails to download with the VPN turned OFF? In the past, running a VPN at the same time as Jaksta had the potential to cause problems. It generally should not be an issue these days with the updates and fixes we have put in place, but it is still a good idea to check.

If the problem persists, I would suggest sending through a clean log file and a link to a test video that you know does not work - it's a good idea to make it the same one as in the log file.

To get a clean log, you will need to do the following.

- Open JMR

- Go to Preferences > General > Find Log File

- Close JRM but keep the Finder window with the log file open

- Delete the log file and still keep the Finder window open

- Reopen JMR (this will generate a new log file)

- Run one test on a YouTube video that you know gives an error/fails (ie. the link you provided)

- Close JMR

- Go back to the Finder window with the new log file and attach it here (don't copy and paste the code in it - send the file itself)

Hi Liam,
Actually an amazing good idea. I normally try that too, as it solved part of the problem before. But after the changes of the site the VPN-DNS did not work either, and VPN solved that problem, so I did not give that a thought this time. Actually I need the VPN-DNS only for region limited shows, those ridiculous copyright shows in Dutch that only the Dutch are interested in :-). But I will try that tonight. Thanks for reminding me. I will keep you posted.

Tried it, but now I get the expected message: "You are not allowed to watch this video from your location"

Hi Liam,

I don't know if you follow my experiences anymore but I experienced the following:

It appears that a lot of this site is downloadable if I switch off the proxy settings that Jaksta uses. I now use just the url possibility. I open the preferred window, copy the web location and copy it in the video url window. Than Jaksta starts to download, or gives an error message. But still I'm afraid that Jaksta should look into the technical reason why the url gives the right download and using the proxy settings does not.

Hope this is helpful for exploring the issue.

Gert

Hi Gert,

Glad to hear that you have had some success.

If you would like us to investigate further then we can, but we would need a log file form you so we can see what is happening with your setup - I still don't think we have seen one from you up until this point.

Instructions on how to get a clean log are listed above.

I remember when you first posted about this issue I did a test on the site/video and it worked, so the problem may be specific to you. This is what we need to determine.

Well, Liam, I think the first time I posted about this site is some time ago. This is a whole new change and a complete new setup of the site. So I'm not sure if the test you ran is still valid. But the past is not relevant anymore. I thought I had sent you a log, but looking back at the posts, it appears I did not. I will send you 2 logs. One with the proxy settings switched off, using only the Video URL window, the second is the log with the proxy settings "on".

It results in a lot of Rail Away/ Canada/ Prince Rupert-Jasper kijk je op npo.nl.m2ts-files, all not complete and not viewable.

Hi Gert,

It will actually help if you send through some fresh log files and run one test only in each.

If you directly follow these instructions it should be pretty easy:

- Open JMR

- Go to Preferences > General > Find Log File

- Close JRM but keep the Finder window with the log file open

- Delete the log file and still keep the Finder window open

- Reopen JMR (this will generate a new log file)

- Run one test on a standard video stream that you know gives an error/fails

- Close JMR once it fails or wait until it crashes

- Go back to the Finder window with the new log file and attach it here (don't copy and paste the code in it - send the file itself)

If you can send through a log for each downloading method (stream capture and the URL bar), then just repeat the process above for each test so that the results in the logs are independent. When you do the URL download you can just turn the proxy settings OFF by switching the monitoring button in Jaksta from ON to OFF. Obviously you will want to make sure that monitoring is on when you go to do the stream capture download.

Hi Liam, to do that all takes some time of which I do not have a lot. But luckily I am able to work around the problem for now. The problem is that the datafiles are not all the same. Some are blocked in favor of a payed version of the site, some do not download at all because the succeeded to successfully block region-limited content, even using VPN or DNSvpn. Some downloads using the automatic download function (proxy) work well, some have crap as a result. Some others can only be downloaded using the URL window. (which works great for me). And it is not really clear which download option can be used by what content file. So it will take some trial and error to provide the log files.

By the way, how much will be visible in the log file. If I start experimenting, will it record everything, or do I have to copy the logfile every time I have done a new experiment?

So I really should take a day to provide you with the results of my experiences.

By the way, I started to use the Screen Recorder. I tried to record a documentary that I can not download the "normal" Jaksta way. But clicking the full screen button opens a separate window that the screen recorder can't see. I am not able to get the screen screenrecorder over that window. Too bad. It's this link:> https://www.npo.nl/2doc/04-05-2017/VPWON_1273549< played on a Mac.

Anyway I will come back to you the moment that I will have a little more time. I will follow this thread though.
