Yes there is a way to make files smaller. This can be with or without changing the file type.

What you will need to do is add the video you want to convert, then hover over the picture/poster for the show in the list and click on the 'i' that appears. Then click on the 'Advanced' tab that presents itself and you will have the option to keep the resolution at the 'Current Resolution' or drop it to a lower one. Dropping the resolution will give you a smaller file. Then make any other changes you want (such as file type) and then convert it. 

Hopefully that will do what you need.
