Brand new user, can't record. What am I doing wrong?

Hello,

  I have just licensed the software and installed it on Windows 7.  I did a precautionary reboot, just in case.  

  I can't do a recording and get an icon indicating failure immediately.  I also can't change the value in the channel field. 

  Thanks for whatever help you can give.
